Ala-Kol Lake

Ala-Kol Lake is one of the most breathtaking alpine lakes in Kyrgyzstan, perched high in the Terskey Ala-Too range above Karakol. Situated at around 3,560 meters, the lake is famous for its intense turquoise color, which shifts with sunlight and weather.

Reaching Ala-Kol requires a challenging but rewarding trek – most commonly along the popular Karakol – Altyn-Arashan route. The trail takes hikers through forests, rocky passes, and wide mountain valleys before opening up to the lake’s dramatic, glacier-fed waters surrounded by steep peaks.

From the lake, hikers can climb to Ala-Kol Pass (about 3,900 meters) for panoramic views of the entire basin and distant snowcapped mountains. Many continue on to the hot springs of Altyn Arashan for a well-earned rest.

Remote, wild, and strikingly beautiful, Ala-Kol Lake is a highlight for trekkers exploring the Ysyk-Kol region.
