Sary-Chelek Lake is a stunning alpine lake located in western Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad region, within the Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve, a UNESCO-listed biosphere area. Sitting at about 1,873 meters above sea level, the lake is surrounded by steep, forested hills and snowcapped peaks, creating a pristine and serene environment.
The lake is known for its deep blue water, which reflects the surrounding mountains and dense walnut, spruce, and fir forests. A short trail circles the lake, offering hikers spectacular views, while longer treks lead to nearby mountain meadows, waterfalls, and smaller lakes within the reserve.
Sary-Chelek is rich in biodiversity, including rare plants, birds, and wildlife like brown bears and lynx, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. Its combination of tranquil beauty, clear waters, and unspoiled landscapes makes Sary-Chelek Lake one of Kyrgyzstan’s most remarkable natural treasures.
